Challenge

The goal was to design a bike that would be more than a women's version of a men's bike. A bike that is geared towards the mobility needs of women who use it to get around in their everyday lives.

With a torsion-resistant frame that can withstand heavy loads and with an adapted and optimized geometry. Specifically, that meant sitting upright and comfortably - and riding safely.

The task became more complex due to the use of two different motors, battery sizes, circuit variants - and all this in combination with a slim design.

Solution

A step-through with an integrated battery that can be removed from the top. Which is no easy task: the main tube requires a relatively large cut-out so that the battery can be easily removed. We also needed a good solution to cover this section. Our customers wanted to paint the battery cover themselves, which is why aluminium was chosen. The cover is screwed to the battery with sliding t-blocks. An adjustment plate and adjusting screws ensure tolerance compensation and a homogeneous clearance.

With the radical omission of the top tube, not only a successful step-through series was created but also a prime example of how to actively and sustainably push the market in a completely new direction - when you think in new ways.

At Velobyrd we focus a lot of our experience on bicycles with 20-inch wheels: compact and folding bikes, which have always been realized with technically outstanding and globally successful brands as partners. With manufacturers like Dahon, Tern or i:SY.

For these brands we organized the production and, in some cases, even completed the entire process. We managed the EU sales and even helped to develop the brand from the first ideas.

Solution

The first e-bikes from all these manufacturers were born under the care of Velobyrd. When Bosch then launched the 2nd generation of drives and batteries, our goal was to build the best possible e-bike on the market.

Without compromise, with a hidden battery and a quiet and efficient motor, equipped with a comfortable low entry and a stable and safe handling. And all this combined with an innovative folding technique and great design.

When we were satisfied with the development, we launched this bike under the name Banzai, with brands such as KTM, Flyer or Gudereit. Years later our success still proves us right.

In order to develop the right concept for our customers, we always look at the purpose, requirements and cost target first. Then, and only then, is the frame created. For hardtails, city and trekking bikes, it’s based on frame geometry, material and drive type. For “Fullys” we also take the rear kinematics into consideration.

Challenge

Solution

You don't build the best bike by taking a few ideas from the bike industry, write SUV on it, install a large battery and an XT gear shifter. You build it by rethinking it. Shogun impressively shows what is possible with the consistent application of current technology.

Take: the best drive system from Bosch, make mounting and dismounting safer and more comfortable because it is deeper and increase the comfort even more with full suspension. A Gates belt drive makes the Shogun virtually maintenance-free. The result is a cool design - and above all an e-bike that is suitable for everyday use and cycling with top performance.

Started in April 2021 with a development time of just 20 months it really is in a class of its own.
